Description

Welcome to “Captain’s Castle”! Home sleeps up to 8 adults.

Walk to the Monterey Bay Aquarium from this outstanding location. Ask our Reservationists about two days for the price of one admission tickets when you book this home!

Watch the waves crash on the rocks just outside your door from the tower of a fantasy house that melds elements of a castle with quaint Victorian charm.

This historic home built in 1883, sits just steps from Monterey Bay and a walking/bicycling trail that meanders for 15 miles along the coastline. You're less than a 10 minute walk along this trail to Cannery Row and the aquarium.

The exterior of this whimsical 2356 square feet, 4-bedroom, 2-bath home, called “Captain's Castle,” comes complete with gargoyles, gables and stained glass windows. The predominant feature is a square tower that offers a bird's-eye view of all the comings and goings on the bay.

As you open the front door to the entry, with its coved ceiling and built-in cabinetry with insets of royal blue, topaz and wine that match the stained-glass panels framing virtually every window in the house, you will feel you are in your own seaside inn. The entry leads to a cozy Victorian-style living room with a high paneled ceiling, brass-faced gas fireplace and an antique chandelier. The elegant furnishings include an ivory brocade sofa, 2 azure velvet chairs and patterned area rug. Both rooms look out to the bay. The 1st story and most of the 2nd have hardwood floors.

Upon your arrival you will be greeted with complementary wine and cheese, tickets for a wine tasting at Scheid Vineyards’ tasting room in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea and a basket of local information. An assigned concierge vacation house manager is available to assist you during your stay. We have also provided spa amenities in the bathrooms, spa robes and beach gear.

Enjoy movies in a spacious family room with hardwood wainscoting, sectional sofa, ottoman and a 50” flat-screen TV. An open counter with stools connects the family room to the updated kitchen with its beautiful wood cabinets and slate gray Corian counter-tops. Everything you could desire for preparing and serving fabulous gourmet meals is available, including a Viking stainless steel gas range, Sub Zero side-by-side refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and beautiful dishes and table linens.

Enjoy coffee or casual meals at a round table for 4 in a sunroom facing the fenced-in back patio or take your food outdoors to the wrought-iron pergola equipped with 2 comfortable chairs, a metal table and chairs and umbrella. Well-behaved dogs are welcome.

More formal meals can be served in a paneled dining room with a vaulted ceiling and a bay window. A wooden Queen Anne table and upholstered chairs can seat up to 8.

A full bathroom on this floor has a claw-foot bathtub/shower with a surround curtain. An adjoining laundry room has a stacking washer/dryer.

The 2nd floor has 4 bedrooms. The first – with a king bed - has windows that look to a park and the bay. A 2nd bedroom, overlooking the backyard, has a king bed, an antique bedside table and a rocking chair. A 3rd smaller bedroom, with ocean vistas, has a queen bed. Bask in ocean views from the king bed in the master bedroom.

A large white-tiled bathroom features a deep claw-foot tub and a separate step-in basin shower with water pipes exposed as in days of yore.

The most fun is the 3rd-floor tower with its panoramic views of the bay during the day and the twinkling lights of adjacent cities at night. Two couches, chairs and a round coffee table provide the perfect setting for morning coffee or happy hour.
Children under 13 must be supervised at all times in this room due to the 3rd story windows that open out. The tower is not a sleeping area.

Garage and driveway can park up to 3 cars.

**There is an additional fee for pets**

This home is warm, comfortable, well appointed with everything you need and the views... these views are amazing!
The main floor is large enough for 4 couples to cook, relax, have a nice dinner (inside or outside) with the 2nd floor containing all the bedrooms- and the 3rd floor tower for lounging to enjoy the views. It really breaks up the space perfectly for couples to travel together. It's 1/2 mile to Canary Row and a bit further to Fisherman's Wharf. The walking trail is beautiful, with seals lounging within view. We parked our car and didn't drive again until time to head home.
We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and would stay in this home again every time!

I have rented many vacation rentals around the world and found that the Captain's Castle ranks up near the very top of my list. The Castle has character and the location cannot be beat! There were 7 adults and 1 toddler in our group and the size and layout were perfect. We found it to be extremely clean and the kitchen is well stocked. The private backyard with the large gas grill was an added bonus. We hope to be back in the Captain's Castle in the future.

We had a great long weekend at the Captain's Castle, with seven adult family members together for the holiday. It's a beautiful place at a great location, with many walking choices nearby. The home is unusually well-appointed and fun; Sanctuary staff were quick to help with any needs.

When planning our family weekend away, we were looking for a place that would allow us all time together somewhere we all could explore and enjoy. Captain's Castle was everything we hoped for - and more! Our family, (which includes 3 adult children), loved the time we had - long walks along the water, visiting the aquarium, golf at Pebble Beach, exploring nearby Carmel, a wonderful bike ride on the coast path and, every night, time together in the tower - amazing views, lots of laughter and stories of our day. The house was warm and welcoming, the location incredible and the time we had was everything we hoped for. The perfect getaway. We can't wait to return!

Our mini-family reunion (5 adults; 2 children)so enjoyed our 4 days here. What a major "Wow" factor in addition to being both sophisticated and family-welcoming. Warm and inviting with much attention to the details of comfort and convenience: lots of room to spread out as desired and also have cozy together time; truly a fully equipped, well-working kitchen; plentiful towels; and even laundry detergent. The Tower provided all ages the excitement of watching for otters and dolphins. A "5" in all ways. We have already recommended to others.

We came to the Captain's Castle for a girls' get together for my birthday, and gathered 7 of us at this lovely house. The house was even better than the pictures portrayed, right on the water, clean, welcoming, with snacks all ready to take up to the Tower room!
Everything was comfortable and cozy, including the beds, and we even liked the vintage plumbing.
House manager was very helpful as well, when I called ahead for some additional information, and let us know that the house would actually be available to us a couple of hours earlier than planned.
Overall I can't say enough about this place, and have already recommended it specifically to two different friends.

"Perfect location, fantastic views!  This is one of our favorite PG destinations. The location is perfect--no car is required. But if you have a car, the off-street parking is a plus. The house is very clean and the kitchen is well-stocked. It is a 3-story house so of course there are stairs. I highly recommend this property."

"Loved Everything About It!  My only reluctance in writing this review is that it will give you cause to raise your rates! My family and I loved staying at the Captain's Castle. Staying at the house is like walking back in time without losing any creature comforts. The view from the tower is quite lovely. We spotted whales, dolphins, seals and otters out in the bay. The location is fantastic, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Lovers Point Park are in walking distance. Tide pools across the street and a nature park next door help you appreciate the bounty of California's natural landscape. An added and unexpected bonus was the ability to park in the garage. The bed linens and towels are high quality, and I appreciated the free bottle of wine and cheese platter."

"Loved This House!  We rented this house to celebrate our 55th anniversary. It was perfect for our family. There was plenty of room for 8 of us. Every room was perfectly clean. The kitchen is well stocked. The furniture is in great shape and comfortable. Speaking of comfortable, the same goes for the beds. There were no complaints from anyone. The ocean views from the upstairs are beautiful. Speaking of stairs, I would caution anyone with mobility problems, as the stairs are quite steep. The back yard has both patio and lawn areas. Our son brought his dog and she had plenty of room to enjoy. There is also a small park, just across the street. This house is located in a great part of PG. It's within walking distance to the Aquarium and Cannery Row, in one direction, and Lover's Point in the other direction. You can access The Coastal Recreation Trail, just across the street. Even though its located close to a busy street, we were not bothered by street noise, and the neighborhood was quiet. Our whole family loved the 3 days we stayed here."

"Sister Birthday Celebration.  The castle was great. We loved sitting on the third level drinking wine and enjoying the view. It was too cool to have the windows open but we could still hear the waves breaking. The house was very clean and very comfortable with lots of seating areas and plenty of nice towels for bathing. As far as the negatives, the bedroom floor was very cold while we were there. There is no heat on that level or in the downstairs bathroom. The bathroom situation is not best. The shower upstairs is unique but basically useless. I realize they are trying to retain the authenticity of the home but the toilet downstairs is VERY small. We were a group of four and we made do with the showering issue but it would difficult with more people.  With all that said, I would still recommend the castle for it's uniqueness, cleanliness, size, view and location."

"We loved it!  We were a group of 8 ladies, long time friends who gather together for a long weekend every year. We have stayed in many different locations and houses. I think we all agreed that this was one of our best choices! The house was so charming and exceeded our expectations; it was clean, comfortable, well appointed & the kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed. Needless to say, the location couldn't be better! We had a problem getting the TV to work and Julia, the property manager, was there to help us shortly after we called her. The only negative for us was the old fashioned shower upstairs - we ended up all using the downstairs shower which was a bit bothersome because there were 8 of us. We loved the crows nest for evening cocktails! We would definitely return to this house again!!"

“A Castle Vacation fit for Royalty! We had a totally delightful long weekend at the Captain's Castle in Pacific Grove. First, the house. Located steps from the ocean, the house is one-of-a-kind. Unique, beautifully but comfortably decorated. The attention to detail is exquisite. We cooked most of our meals 'in', in a very spacious, well-equipped kitchen. The sweet little back yard was perfect for sitting with a cup of coffee, or watching the bandit raccoon at night. I think all of us would agree (and we had three generations visiting) that the turret room was a most delightful place to share a glass of wine, or just relax and watch the ocean. Next, the city of Pacific Grove...we had so much fun just walking, biking, and even running along the trails that run alongside the ocean. The weather was delightful. It was an easy bike ride to Asilomar Beach for boogie-boarding, surfing, and general beaching-it. We found another beach for rock-clamboring, and tide-pooling. A visit to the Light-House was a must. Deer roam in wooded areas...What a lovely city! I in particular came home refreshed from our little vacation!"

"We totally loved staying in the 'Captain's Castle'! I loved all the details...the trimming around the doors...the doorknobs...the beersteins and beercoaster detail in the dining room...just delightful! The turret room was a special treat, and a retreat for my son, who needed extra sleep and a hideaway after working his night shifts...we loved watching the raccoon in the back yard at night...and we loved the city itself; taking walks along the ocean, riding our bikes, visiting the lighthouse. We have shared pictures of 'our' house at the beach with many people. My entire family was delighted with our stay in your beautiful house. We had three generations in the house, and celebrated a 5-y.o. birthday. A perfect vacation retreat, so close to the beach! Thank you for such a lovely vacation! I totally will give a 5 Star review."

“Castle By The Bay. We booked the Captain's Castle for a family vacation and we had a wonderful stay. The Castle is conveniently located right across the street from the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail and only a short distance from the Aquarium. The house has a lot of character (including creaky floors) and the accommodations were very clean, well maintained, and met our every need. The managing company was professional and though we did not need to contact them outside of our booking arrangements, we expect that they would be very responsive to our needs. It was great to walk out the door and be at the ocean; there's even a tidal pool area that fascinated our toddler. We highly recommend the Castle to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable stay in the Monterey area.”

“Magnificent! It's 1/2 mile to Cannery Row and a bit further to Fisherman's Wharf. The walking trail is beautiful, with seals lounging within view. We parked our car and didn't drive again until time to head home. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and would stay in this home again every time!”

We can't wait to return!”

“Perfect! I have a lot of experience renting vacation homes and this one is at the top of my list! When you combine the location (perfect) and the character/charm of the Captain's Castle it hits the ball right out of the park. It was very clean, beds are super comfortable, kitchen was nicely stocked and the 3rd floor observation/cocktail hour room was a winner. The location is great because it is walking distance to to many things. We were a group of 7 adults and 1 toddler and we had plenty of space to stretch out. The enclosed backyard with a great gas grill was another benefit. I hope to be able to stay here again if our travels bring us back to the area.”

We have already recommended to others.”

“Terrific Location In A Beautiful Home. We were visiting Pacific Grove from Baltimore and were delighted with our stay at the Captain's Castle. First off, the location was perfect. We were able to see seals and their newborn pups just outside our door. We were a 7 minute walk to the Monterey Aquarium and many restaurants and bars in Monterrey. The Castle was extremely comfortable. Our favorite features was the third floor 'tower' where we enjoyed wine and cheese as we looked upon the waves crashing onto the shore. Perfect! The Castle was very comfortable and well equipped. We slept great! An added, unexpected bonus was the quaint town of Pacific Grove itself. It is a very charming place with several very fine restaurants and bars-many of which were walking distance from the Castle. We rode our bikes on the famed and very beautiful 17 mile drive. “Beautiful, Fun Stay! “Castle Adventure. The winter weather was unseasonably nice so a few of us headed down to Monterey for some golf and stayed at the castle. What a find! After chopping around the links it was nice to head up to the 19th hole at the top of the tower, put on some tunes, and enjoy the view while replaying both good shots of the day. The driveway had ample room for all three of our cars and the large flat screen downstairs was good for catching some hoops. On top of it all, we didn't have to drive for dinner, just a quick ten minute walk to Cannery Row. The kitchen seemed to be outfitted really well although we only used the corkscrews and bottle openers.”

“Gorgeous Home! The weekend I spent with friends at this wonderful home couldn't have been better! The exterior castle facade (complete with tiny gargoyles!) was certainly charming, but the interior decor and fixtures are what makes this house truly unique. The owners keep the vintage feel of the home alive with the craftsman wood paneling and the luxurious claw-foot tubs in the bathrooms. Our favorite spot was definitely the tower, where you can usually see several otters being cute in the bay not too far from shore. If you decide to venture out, it's only a short walk along the coast to Cannery Row, which is especially convenient when you have had one too many at Sly McFly's. Overall, a beautiful home in a beautiful location! We hope to be returning soon!”

The Captain's Castle is just minutes from Cannery Row where my girlfriends and I were able to enjoy great meals, wine tasting with a view, and some fun nightlife. While we weren't able to visit the Aquarium, it was just steps away. “Captain’s Castle--Pacific Grove. From the moment we saw it, we knew the Captain's Castle in Pacific Grove is the right place for a group/personal retreat. The whimsical house is well-grounded in the lovely landscaped garden and private Eden of a patio with a fenced grassy lawn (big enough and private enough to hold outdoor yoga class, or writers' group discussion). The Castle Tower reaches for the stars with magnificent panoramic views of the sea and sky- great for meditation and just watching and listening to the ocean and living into the sky, the trees, the sun, and moon. The first floor has nooks and comfortable furniture to settle in for privacy a wonderful open kitchen with a large adjacent central room in which to gather and socialize. The Castle is located on a quiet side street with a woodland pocket-park of local plants and trees right on the water, only a few steps away from the front door. They closest neighbors behind arching trees and tall fences are quiet and peaceful. The Castle is just 18 steps away from the spiritually uplifting coastal walking path and the breath-taking sea herself. Sanctuary Vacation Rentals is true to its name, providing an experience of calm and beauty that is more than just a great place to stay. Sanctuary carefully and thoughtfully anticipates guests and provides the perfect setting for a stress-free and spa-like stay - green cleaning products, luxurious bath products, bathrobes, lush linens and bedding, led candles in the front hall and by the beds, inspirational books, literature on the local sights and events, pre-stocked kitchen for your first glass of wine and continental breakfast. Sanctuary goes above and beyond most rentals with charming notes posted here and there that help a visitor find her way around the heating system, the charming antique shower, the high tech connections, and the kitchen appliances, taking the guess-work out of staying in this grand and comfortable sanctuary.”

“Location, Location, Location. My trip from Wisconsin was culminated in my stay at the Captain's Castle. The location was absolutely perfect just yards from the coastal walking trail, minutes from Cannery Row restaurants, and the sound of waves and barking harbor seals. Early evening cocktails in the tower were enhanced by the incredible sound and sight of breaking waves on the nearby rocks. The house is especially unique with the craftsmen style woodwork and stained glass windows. I could tell a lot of care was taken to preserve the vintage bathrooms, lighting fixtures, fireplace, yet making it modern comfortable. Pretty nice entertainment options also with a large flat screen TV, MP3 sound system, and Bose Soundwave in the tower. We were too busy going out to eat but I could have really enjoyed grilling a nice big steak on the back patio. It was such an easy walk to places like Hula Grill, Trailside Cafe, Mando's Mexican, Louie Linguini's, and the Cannery Row Brewing Company that driving was not needed at all.”

“Coastal Castle Fun. We spent a 3 day weekend with another couple and found the Castle to be just perfect in every way. Starting with an easy to find and accessible location with ample parking we had three cars and there was room for one more. We had previously lived in London and having explored plenty of castles over there found it fun to be staying in one here in CA ! The rooms were spacious and comfortably furnished, lots of room to relax. I particularly enjoyed the Castle turret with its expansive view of the Bay, just outside the window and across the street, a great place for evening cocktails. A really convenient feature I enjoyed is the quick, ten minute, walk to the pier area with all the excellent restaurants and places to see. The owner had provided plenty of area and restaurant brochures and literature to aid us in making decisions on places to go and things to do. The Castle was neat and clean, I look forward to staying there again in the future and have already recommended it to my sister-in-law who is booking for a group of 8 this August.”

The morning light coming into the tower was my sanctuary for tea and thought. We watched the harbor seals vying for beach front with their newborns and was a sight to be seen. The location was perfect for a walk morning, noon and evening. On one of our walks we saw a Doe and Fawn walking down 3rd street to take a walk with all of the public on their strolls. Luckily they were safe from traffic. Be it the beaches nearby and in Carmel By the Sea, or the restaurants and great kitchen and dining room we had many choices for enjoying our stay. Easy to get to and a fun place to enjoy this will make a wonderful retreat from life! The upstairs retro shower is a must.. “Cozy Castle - A Sanctuary In The Midst. From the moment we arrived I knew we were in the right place - quiet side street, fabulous views, whimsical fun architecture, historic detail, unique interior decor, comfortable furniture, sparkling kitchen, and plenty of room to be together as a group or find a cozy nook in the house or lovely garden patio to contemplate the beauty. The neighborhood is peaceful residential - the front of the house faces a natural woodland private park, the neighbors are quiet, you can hear the ocean and sea birds throughout the house. The ocean and wondrous walking path along the unspoilt natural coastline is literally 20 paces out the door. You can follow the path towards or away from humanity. Plenty to watch, plenty to listen to, plenty to fill your soul. There were 4 of us in our group with one rental car, which could have presented conflicts had it not been for the shops, bookstores, natural supplement store, restaurants, markets, and beach and path all within a 10 minute walk. Sanctuary Vacation Rentals anticipated what we might want to start relaxing and unwinding after a day of travel...The front hall was set with led candles aglow. The kitchen was stocked with the makings of a sunset wine and cheese party up in the "tower" overlooking the ocean, as well as plenty for breakfast including the supplies for coffee and tea making. They also provided bathrobes, towels, eco-friendly laundry and dishwasher soap and signs to help us navigate the unique antique plumbing in the baths (elegant), the electronics, and the house systems, as well as providing us with inspirational and informational reading - all thoughtfully placed to save us time and keep us clear and balanced as we enjoyed this lovely house and this glorious place.”

It was fantastic to walk to Monterey Bay aquarium and also into downtown Pacific Grove which is packed with cute boutiques, restaurants and even a movie theatre. My favorite aspect of the house are the many wonderful ocean views from the living areas and the bedrooms. Watching the waves crash and the sea otters frolic was a delight! The beach trail right outside the front door affords some of the best views of the bay and you can walk, jog or ride a bike along the trail. I would highly recommend this house as we thought it was a great value. We look forward to a return visit.”
